Είναι μια προσωπική επιστροφή στο ερώτημα: πώς κοιτάζουμε τον άλλον; Και πώς μπορούμε να κοιτάζουμε, χωρίς να πληγώνουμε;

The photographs presented here were taken in different places – both in Istanbul and in Kalamata, my hometown. They are not simple depictions of poverty or marginalization, but a personal record of the experience of seeing, being moved, and attempting to understand the human condition of the “other,” the vulnerable one, the child growing up on the margins.

The children photographed belong to communities that are often labeled by society with stereotypical terms – such as “gypsy kids” or other names that suggest not identity but social distance. My intention was not to reproduce these labels, but to give visibility to a silent presence – an everyday existence that often goes unnoticed or is considered “uncomfortable.”

Aware of the sensitivity of the subject, I approached the act of photography with respect and empathy. The artist’s gaze here does not aim to expose, but to bear witness. It does not seek pity, but the recognition of human dignity in the face of difficult circumstances. The presence of the children’s faces in these photographs is not decorative; it is essential in allowing the viewer to feel the weight and the silence of the moment.

At the same time, I acknowledge that recording and publishing such images carries responsibilities – legal, social, and ethical. As these are children, they are not an anonymous “subject,” but real beings with rights. For this reason, I continuously reflect on how the images are presented, the access to them, and the context in which they are shown.

I hope this work becomes an occasion for reflectiondialogue, and perhaps a deeper understanding of the world we often pass by.

“I couldn’t find any records of a summer concert in Central Park featuring violinist Leonidas Kavakos. His official website doesn’t provide an archive of past performances from that period. Additionally, the New York Philharmonic’s archives, which document their park concerts, don’t list any events featuring Kavakos as a soloist.”
